Bro you should be changing out fresh reservoir every week if you're running dwc. That nasty stuff could also be algae that's stained from the nute solution. That's what happens when you use a light color bucket that still let's light in. Not good for roots at all. And that means not good for the plant.

I am on my first grow. Using Fox Farm. My tap water is around 7.5, so I wonder if adding a bit of apple cider vinegar will also do the trick for my plants?

are you using tap- or RO water? if tap, what's your starting EC? if RO, do they contain any calcium and magnesium, or would it be necessary to get that back in separately?
