Why are so many people here assuming that this is going to make buying legal weed too expensive driving them back to the dealers?
We already know the illegal drug industry has exorbitant markups and makes billions in profits. But you don't know what the final prices of legal weed will be yet. When legalization kicks in it could very likely have a major deflating effect on the base costs of production making legal weed cheaper before taxes. Dealers losing customers could drop out of the business making it harder to buy illegal weed, and as illegal business becomes less profitable illegal weed will feel pressure to increase in cost. There's no sense in whinging about things that in another decade you will just accept. Bottom line is that the government won't be able to make weed prohibitively more expensive than the black market because they have to compete with black market prices if they want the tax revenue.
$1 should be the price per gram not the tax per gram.
