Bea Foote – Weed (1938)

The latter artist is certainly the most famous artist in this style that also includes greats such as Alberta Hunter and Ethel Waters. Foote’s song “Weed” has long been considered one of the best, and the latest puff of interest in this subject has included not only reissues on labels such as Stash of her own recording of the song, but a cover version as well by the pot-obsessed Exit 13 band.

This is my favourite of the old viper songs. Actually, one of my favourite songs, period. Bea Foote, you gotta love that name. I just think this song is beautiful – when the finally begins singing – it's sooooo beautiful, and it takes my breath away – and I ain't even smoking now!
The melody… its so beautiful, so kind, so wonderful…
I wish I knew who wrote it. And that there was a better recording of it.. I first heard this, I think, on the Fitz Hugh Ludlow online library of old texts on Drugs, where I think there was a small collection of old viper songs.
Does anybody have a link to the official lyrics, or at least the correct ones? I love this song, but its an old recording and sometimes words get jumbled.
