I am so glad you enjoyed this book! I went in not expecting much and now I am assigning it to my Comparative Politics class when we do the chapter on South Africa. Great review, as always.

Excellent review! I really appreciate how Noah can expose the intersections between SA & the US.

  5. Bhargavi Ravi says:

Fantastic review as always! Funnily enough, I just bought this book last week and it's winging (crawling) its way towards me in the post. Now I'm even more excited to read it!

  6. Frannie for thoughts says:

Lately I'be been watching Trevor Noah's Daily Show and I must say I love his commentary as well as his insight and he's also a great comedian!
So I'll definitely read his book soon, I' like to know more about him and about apartheid. I'm glad you enjoyed it and recommend it!

  7. The Page Turner says:

I thought exactly the same thing. Noah's story is unique and powerful and deserves to be told.

  8. Dr. Moostoffelees, Cow M.D says:

I swear, I cannot explain how happy it makes me when I see a thepoptimist video in my subscription feed.

For everyone interested: listen. to. the. audiobook.

You say: "Read this" I say: "When?" So, TBR-ed. ๐Ÿ™‚

So glad you enjoyed this, I loved reading about his mom in this book. I have also heard that the audio book is a really great too.

I listened to the audiobook for this one a few months ago (well worth it for the accents he does). He's done so much autobiographical material in his comedy that I was expecting it to be a rehash of the same bits. But even though a lot of the material was the same, he managed to put a different spin on some of the same stories (that "my grandmother used to beat my cousins" story that you mentioned was one of them – the same lead-in lines, but then the bulk of the story was from a different angle), which I thought was impressive.

It did make me think that a lot of his "Daywalker" jokes were probably more humour than reality (I could be wrong, of course!).

I had no desire to read this book. Fine. But then thepoptimist shows up, likes the book, and Add to Cart happens. Actually, the part about his mother sold me. I like books about strong mothers! I didn't have one myself, and am trying hard to BE one.

  17. jbsubscribes says:

Well, I believe this is the first Booktube post I have seen that mentions Swedish Herd-Calling! I have been resisting this read because Trevor Noah seems brilliant and very thoughtful about his own image…that combination can be unsettling.

  18. yesknopemaybe says:

I just finished the audiobook so it was fun to see this video pop up in my feed! Never thought I'd die laughing at the idea of a Hitler dance party. Great review!

I am listening to this right now on audiobook. I'm only about an hour in, but really enjoying it!
