That is a good thing about youtube, it's global reach. I look at youtube as sort of a modern way of having pen pals to some degree. Right when I think 80's rap I listened to Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim, Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick, Run DMC- a bit but never bought their cassettes/albums/cds, Special ED, Beastie Boys. The Beastie Boys really showed musical growth in the cds that followed their debut."Check Yo Head," was excellent(all the better when medicated and sonically brilliant.) They all had the talent to play instruments damn well and that cd showcased it plus they became activists on issues like Tibet. They came a long way from Girls and No sleep til Brooklyn, no doubt. The 80's also had The Fat Boys and E.P.M.D. I think N.W.A came out around 88'-90' but I never dug their music, I detested it actually. You know we share an appreciation of the Digable Planets. "Blowout comb," is a classic yet sold far less than their debut. You're right on the title, "Reachin' A new Refutation of Time and Space."  "Blowout Comb," sounded pleasingly different and lyrically it had more activist and what some would deem black militant content. A lot of their initial fans just wanted a part 2 of their debut not unlike fans of Purple Rain who wanted Purple Rain part 2 and got Around the World in a Day. It was unfortunate that clever rappers/ so called alternative rap groups( Digable, Arrested Development, Spearhead, Gumbo, Tribe called Quest) tended to break up quickly and didn't get exposure like the gangster rappers N.W.A. Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop, Spice 1, Bone Thugs and Harmony etc. I will admit that Bone is a guilty pleasure, mostly because I like their melodies and singing harmonies despite the content. Yet not excusing the majority of the content. Had rap never existed they could have been like the Temptations or a very succesful R & B singing group. But the music industry purposely created this dynamic. For example, Tupac started out with conscious rap and ultimately for commercial reasons and to get a record deal he went gangster and now is considered by millions as an icon. He was very complex, from a song like "Dear Mama" to the extreme opposite with "Hit em up" about the Biggie and Faith Evans foolishness/beef. I haven't seen the Tupac movie and don't plan to, the trailer was horrible. I liked Tupac, not all his stuff but "Me Against the World," was his most mature album and had a scope that his previous cds didn't. Had he not been assassinated I think his music would have shifted and evolved away from gangster rap. Suge Knight, a true thug, had him in a contractual bind too.

Ladybug is one of my all time fave mc's/rappers. Did you ever listen to her solo cd? I liked it a lot and she added singing to the mix on it. It seemed within the group that she wasn't treated or respected as an equal behind the scenes. It was more like Butterfly and Doodlebug were like we started the group and you're fortunate we added you vibe. Too bad whatever inner squabbles and dynamics kept them from making more than only two original cds as a group although they released a greatest hits type cd with maybe two new songs. She was mad cool to interview and it felt more like a nice conversation. I also had the pleasure of her reading me some of her poetry over the phone. It was the best feature I ever wrote that never made it to print in the newspaper. If I find it in my clips archive I can email it to you if you like. I think you would enjoy it. The first female mc's/rappers I remember was Roxanne and or Roxanne Shante. It was good having Queen Latifah in the mix too. Rap never had a good balance of female and male rappers. Death Row screwed over Lady of Rage and I don't think she ever was able to release her own debut because of Suge and the madness going on at his label. I don't follow new rappers and couldn't name any that are popular right now or any that I listen to. I'm just into other types of music mostly jazz, classic r & b or trip hop. Great show!
