So I thought I was done painting for the Perfect Sketchbook Show but could’t resist the idea of painting a full 2-page painting that crossed the page. Thanks Erwin for a great idea! In this video I talk about how I work out painting a challenging complex wooded treeline.

You have taught me so much about watercolors. Thank you also for the bible verses!

  5. Loquacious One says:

I've planned to do a two-page layout sometime and am glad you went first! My fear is the crack will pool paint and darken a line down the middle. Can see I'll need to review this again before starting my own project.

  6. In Liquid Color says:

Beautifully detailed piece, Steve! I love it spanning the two pages. It's nice that that sketchbook lays so flat!

  7. Stacy Thompson says:

Hi Steve, Are you familiar with Chinese brush stroke techniques? Can you demonstrate them? Much appreciation for all you do. You're an amazing teacher.

  8. Maryan Harrell says:

Thanks, Steve. I learned a lot from this one!

  9. Susan Martin says:

This is so helpful Steve. I love the way you explain everything, you make me feel that I just might be able to do this. Keep up the wonderful work.

I'm writing a new song that's going to be a big hit. It's called, "Gotta Treat Leaf Clumps Like a Mass!" I may add the word "baby" at the end, not sure yet. But seriously, Steve, anyone watching this video – despite their level or ability – is going to walk away a better artist. Plain and simple. And that's why myself, and I assume many others are thrilled when you post a new video showcasing how you approach a painting. It's like finding a small key that opens just one simple lock to self-improvement. Always grateful for the inspiration and to watch you work. Great stuff right here, my friend. Thank you! 😀

Absolutely love your tutorials, I've only recently discovered them, new subscriber x

  12. Maureen Garcia says:

Thank you so much! Your tutorial answered so many of my questions about painting a wooded area like the one in your painting. Two thumbs up for this demo!

  13. Clint Hathcock says:

I've practiced. Ive watched video after video. I've bought good paints, paper, and brushes and my watercolors do nothing anybody else's on YouTube does. I think it's my paint consistency. Water to pigment ends up looking the same. If not, it's too thick. There is no middle ground. About ready to go back to oils.

  14. Ted Keasey says:

Thanks Steve. I ran into this problem with my last painting. Ending up just changing the look to my skill level. Now I know what to do next time 🙂

  15. Kathleen Townsend says:

Steve, I just love your style! You also do a great job explaining what and why you’re doing what you do. Thank you for sharing your talent with us! Question: when you started painting the darker values, were the lighter value trees completely dry or did you leave them damp? I’m assuming you let them dry, but just wanted to be sure!

  16. Kris Hoffer says:

Having now watched about 20 of your vids, Im worried that I might be addicted. Im heading to Mozambique for work next month and I feel bery inspired to do some plein air work while Im there.

  19. Michelle Wainer says:

Thank you for another great video, Steve. I so appreciate what you do and how you teach and talk about technique. Your style is very comfortable and approachable compared with other instructors on YouTube or in person. I have learned so much! It may be that I like it because you have a style I gravitate to as a new watercolor painter. Whatever, it works for me. Thanks and keep up the good work. I am glad to be a Patreon supporter.

How do I get premier subscription?

  21. Mikael Friman says:

In several of your videos I've seen you use actual photos as a reference and I've wondered, do you have a photo printer or do you take them somewhere to have them developed/order them online? If you print them yourself, is it cheaper than paying someone else to do it? Anyway, seems so much more comfortable than clicking between several references on a computer screen.

  22. Terry Lynn says:

You are truely an amazing artist. I love your style with the illustrationist background. Your colors are spot on always. When I need to zero out my brain and get back to neutrals and reality you are always here…

  23. April Harvey says:

A few months ago you were outside painting and you had a travel case on top of a tripod. Will you tell me the name and site to get one? It looked really handy. Maplemeadowsmama@telus.net. British Columbia canada

  24. April Harvey says:

Thankyou Steve. Expensive, but worth it. How do attach the case to tripod?

  25. Ivy Roman says:

Thank so much for all your videos. You are a great teacher. I am learning so much.

  26. Heidi Swinehart says:

I’ve learned so much from your tutorials – thank you!

  27. Lee Warren says:

So, after watching this repeatedly, I realized I had a complex foliage scene in my own backyard that I was previously seeing as a mass of boring green. Understand that I love, love trees and foliage but the perimeter of my yard I'd ignored as a subject to paint. With this video and several others, I saw how to turn a stip of green into interesting shapes with a splash of hydrangeas, tinges of red burbury bushes, and a dogwood tree that now pops against a dark background. I also tried some Canson Moulin de Roy rough that I'd been given at Cheap Joe's to make this a learning experience from the git-go. Thumbs up on the paper and I'm an Arches' fan.

  28. Lee Warren says:

Steve, can you check your blog page? I am not able to sign up. The subcribe button remains grey. Thanks.

  29. N Savar says:

All I can say is "Thank you thank you thank you" for sharing. I learn so much from listening and watching you. I"m not sure how you do it — talk while painting complex scenes — but I sure appreciate it. As I recently attempted such a woven light/dark tree-scape (that ended disappointingly), I am pleased to see this approach. Again, my thanks.

  30. Camer1 Person says:

I am being very inspired by your videos. I've been watching them in a "topical" order — how do I find the most recent posts? I feel dumb, but I'd like to be able to see the videos listed in date order. Is there an easy way?

  31. Rob Nash says:

You are obviously an American and yet you speak with an almost English accent.. How come? I have been painting for about 60 years and have never achieved the brilliance that you have. It is obviously an inbred talent, something that the majority of us will never achieve even though you demonstrate brilliantly what can be achieved. More power to your brush!

  32. ChristineD says:

You are a master at this craft! You’ve made me understand some things that I just couldn’t before. This will also apply to masses of flowers or whatever else and you explained it so well that it almost became simple! I said almost! Thank you so much for this! Very much appreciated by me and certainly by many others!

  33. Jean Murdock says:

Great video. Learned a lot. Now to see if I can apply it to my painting.

  34. peggy-lynn Holland says:

    Absolutely lovey, ….great instruction
. I enjoy your videos very much
What kind of watercolor journal are you working in?

  35. Judy Ptak says:

    Great information! Thanks.

  36. Terry Bradshaw says:

    Really enjoyed this one!

  37. Judi Hopewell says:

    Superb teaching. Bless you

  38. Deanie Graves says:

Where can I see part 2? Gorgeous work and instruction!!!

  39. Mindy Keys says:

You, sir are the best teacher I never had. Thank you so very much. Brilliant.

  40. Sophie Ha says:

You are such an excellent teacher. Your brush technique is amazing. It’s so light almost as if you are feathering in the paint. I’ve seen this on other of your videos and it’s a delight to watch. I feel it is so disrespectful of YouTube to interrupt your videos with commercials instead of placing them at the beginning and end of your video.

  41. abdulMuiz Chulan says:

    Thank you mr Steve….

hey, come to Malaysia and we paint together insyaallah.

  42. Patty Leibnitz says:

    Just absolutely gorgeous!
